Mary – happy birthday ;-)

Well today is a very special day for the Buchan family. It’s Mary’s birthday 😉 I dare not mention her age – that would be too indelicate – but suffice to say she is not 16 today 😉

We had a really nice birthday meal at our daughters house yesterday evening and we all gave Mary presents etc…..

See below Mary doing the honours cutting the birthday cake! Happy birthday Mary and we wish you many more of the same 😉

The candles might give a clue to which decade Mary celebrates 😉

Garage first Truss Rafter in place

First truss rafter in place – more progress but snow is now falling which may well impeed work over the weekend. As Robert Burns said in his poem – to a mouse “The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men, Gang aft agley” see here for explanation of what this means!!!!

Its pretty hard doing a project like this in one’s spare time!!!!! But every nail hammered home is one step nearer completion.

So we hope that the forecast is wrong for once!!!

Garage progress 17th December 2009

Making slow progress – but the next few days will be productive I hope with the Truss rafters arriving on Friday morning and also the other roofing materials. It will be a busy weekend weather permitting 😉

And today it started snowing as you can see in the photo above.

Progress has been limited due to the fact that this is a spare time project. I try to work on it for about 1 – 2 hours each evening which is fine but it gets dark at about 4pm at the moment and I work till about 5 so all of my evening work is done in the dark with whatever lighting I can supply. The weather is also a consideration with a combination of both rain and very cold. One evening I had to scrape the frost of the wood surface before work could start 😉

That said, I find working with timber to be really satisfying and my goal for this next 5 days is to have the roof erected and made water tight! I then plan to get the roof tilled over the Christmas break 😉

I have been able to borrow some scaffolding from a friend which is a really benefit for sure meaning that I will be able to work to my own time table as opposed to rushing work when with in a hire period!

Lets hope that the weather is kind over the the next few days – but I am not holding my breath with the forecast for snow and the possibility of a white Christmas. However, we will just havbe to press on as circumstances permit!

I now have two flood lights, a scaffolding tower and a thermal boiler suite, it is really gratifying to see how friends rally round at the time like this providing useful support by lending equipment etc….

Garage progress 10th December 2009

Continuing to make progress on the garage project – although its hard work due this short days and having to work on the construction of the timber frame walls in the evenings. However, I believe we are on track to have the walls complete and structurally sound for the arrival roof trusses next week! The following three photos show the building from all angles.

Garage progress 4th Dec 2009

Work is proceeding well with the garage. Yesterday it rained all day so now a good day for building but the builders never stopped as you can see the block wall is almost up to ceiling height! Today we have blue skys and much warmer temperatures 😉

Also the surface water drain has been installed and the trench back filled!

Hoping to do the other two walls over the weekend which will be timber frame construction!
