Broadband Rocks in Japan!!!

Or Broadband is really Broadband in Japan,

In the context of my earlier rants about broadband in the UK this following article make very interesting reading.

It seems that in Japan users can enjoy a fibre connection which can deliver 100 Mbps and can enjoy full screen high quality video delivered via their BB connection!

This shows that where there is a government will it is possible to go beyond the copper cable infrastructure that currently has a strangle hold on our capacity to deliver broadband to the home.

  1. Jim – I was speaking to a Cisco colleague from the Netherlands a few weeks ago who was telling me that he is soon to get a fibre link to his home, and for the equivalent of around £25 pm he will have, to start with, a 100mb symmetrical link. And, in the future, as needs rise, with a fibre link he can effectively have just about any bandwidth he needs or can afford.

  2. Yes John,
It is rather frustrating to live in a country which seems to lack vision in terms of a long term committment to developing infrastructure. I was hearing about BT’s 21CN plans the other day – which is all about delivering all services over IP – but no credible strategy to upgrade the local loop which is the common limiting element of the existing infrastructure. I fear that most of us will be stuck with ADSL for some time to come.
